Description

Provincial routes have a green diamond shield with a white border and yellow text. Regional routes are the same, but rectangular. Despite the different shield appearance, these are both conflated with network=za:regional. Before we can add support for these route shields, route=road relations for provincial routes would need to have a separate network value, such as network=za:provincial.

Metropolitan municipalities can signpost their own routes, with M-prefixed numbers. Some cities have chosen to use unique shield designs, while others have opted for a simple rectangle identical to regional routes. Currently, only network=za:capetown is present in route=road relations, and routes for other cities are not completely mapped.

From left to right:

  • Johannesburg-Ekurhuleni-Krugersdorp and Tshwane (Pretoria)
  • Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
  • eThekwini (Durban)
  • Buffalo City (East London), Cape Town, Mangaung (Bloemfontein) and uMgungundlovu (Pietermaritzburg)

Investigate current network tagging for South African routes in OSM. Understand the difference between provincial (green diamond) and regional (green rectangle) routes. Propose a new network value 'network=za:provincial' for provincial routes. Review existing metropolitan route mappings like 'network=za:capetown' and identify missing ones for other cities. Then update the map style to render the appropriate shields based on the network tag.
