Description
Description of the feature you're suggesting.
-
In the Map view screen the label "Speed" is actually showing the "SoG" or Speed over Ground. This is what it is called in the AIS Rx screen.
-
For boats there are generally two types of speed - SoG and Speed through the Water. They can be different because the water also moves with currents, etc.
-
To clear up this confusion I would like to suggest that the label "Speed" be replaced with "SoG".
-
I would also like to suggest that the Alt field be replaced with CoG, which is shown in the AIS Rx screen.
-
I am not sure that AIS actually sends Altitude, or whether the Mayhem software receives this.
-
There is no altitude shown in the AIS RX screen.
-
As AIS is mainly used on the sea altitude is generally zero.
-
The information that is generally required for a vessels is its CoG and SoG. Most marine GPS devices show these two fields.
-
For these reasons Alt should be replaced with CoG if possible.
